The volume of a cylinder (and a steel coil is basically like a big cylinder) is calculated using the formula V = πr²h, where V is the volume, r is the radius of the cylinder, and h is the height (or in the case of a steel coil, the width).

Say you have a steel coil that has an outer radius (R) of 50 centimeters, an inner radius (r) of 20 centimeters (because the coil has a hole in the middle), and a width (h) of 100 centimeters. First, we need to find the volume of the whole cylinder as if it had no hole, and then subtract the volume of the hole to get the actual volume of the steel in the coil.
The volume of the whole cylinder (V1) is calculated using the outer radius R. So, V1 = πR²h. Plugging in the numbers, we get V1 = π * (50²) * 100 = π * 2500 * 100 = 250000π cubic centimeters.
The volume of the hole (V2) is calculated using the inner radius r. So, V2 = πr²h. Plugging in the numbers, we get V2 = π * (20²) * 100 = π * 400 * 100 = 40000π cubic centimeters.
Now, the actual volume of the steel in the coil (V) is V = V1 – V2. So, V = 250000π – 40000π = 210000π cubic centimeters. Pi (π) is approximately 3.14159, so V ≈ 210000 * 3.14159 = 659733.9 cubic centimeters.
Calculating the weight
Now that we have the volume, we can calculate the weight. Remember, the density of steel is about 7.85 g/cm³. To find the weight (W), we use the formula W = V * density.
So, W = 659733.9 * 7.85 grams. That comes out to be about 5178811.115 grams. To convert that to kilograms, we divide by 1000. So, the weight of the steel coil is approximately 5178.81 kilograms.
Another way to calculate
Sometimes, you might not have the exact measurements of the inner and outer radii. In that case, you can use a simpler way if you know the thickness of the steel strip in the coil and the length of the strip.
The volume of a rectangular prism (which the steel strip can be thought of as when it’s uncoiled) is V = l * w * t, where l is the length, w is the width (the same as the width of the coil), and t is the thickness.
Let’s say the steel strip in our coil has a thickness of 2 millimeters (or 0.2 centimeters), and the length of the strip when it’s uncoiled is 10000 centimeters (that might be given by the manufacturer or you might measure it in some way), and the width is still 100 centimeters.
Then the volume V = 10000 * 100 * 0.2 = 200000 cubic centimeters.
Using the density of 7.85 g/cm³, the weight W = 200000 * 7.85 = 1570000 grams, or 1570 kilograms.
Factors that can affect the calculation
There are a few things that can throw off your weight calculation. First of all, the density of steel can vary a bit depending on the type of steel. For example, stainless steel has a different density than carbon steel. So, if you’re dealing with a special type of steel, you need to use the right density value.
Also, the steel coil might have some surface imperfections or coatings. A coating can add a bit of extra weight that you need to take into account. And if there are any major dents or bulges in the coil, it can affect the volume calculation.
